Signs of high and low emotional intelligence
High emotional intelligence tends to show up as catching your own feelings early and naming them precisely, staying usable under pressure, checking a read of someone rather than assuming it, and going back to repair after friction. The low end is the same list in the negative. Watch them as a pattern over time, not a label you pin on a person.
What tends to show up
Emotional skill is easier to recognise in behaviour than to define in the abstract, and clearest in a single worked moment; the tells cluster by domain. Reading yourself shows up as catching your own state early and naming it in specific words rather than late and in buckets. Handling yourself shows up as staying usable in a tense hour and recovering without a long tail. Reading others shows up as checking a read instead of assuming it. Handling others shows up, above all, as going back to repair after friction rather than letting it set.
The lower end is usually the same list in the negative, and it is worth stating gently: moods noticed late, a long aftermath after friction, reads asserted rather than checked, conflicts left to harden. These are patterns to work on, gathered on the developing page, not a category anyone belongs to.
Why a sign is a tell, not a verdict
Any single behaviour has other explanations. A quiet person in a meeting may be reading it closely or may be somewhere else entirely, and one snapped reply is an hour, not a character. Signs are worth watching as a pattern over time, in situations that matter, and even then they describe a skill in a context rather than a fixed trait. People are uneven too: strong at reading a room and poor at repairing one is an ordinary shape, which is why a single "emotionally intelligent or not" verdict misses most of what is going on.
What a list of signs cannot settle
How you come across is not something you can score in full from the inside. Self-report captures how you see yourself, which is real and partial, and the people around you hold the half you cannot. That gap is why our report scores a separate situational track rather than resting on self-description alone. For the scored version rather than the watch-for-it version, the test is free to take.
