How long an EQ test should take

What length buys

A score is an estimate built from your answers, and like any estimate it firms up with more evidence. Fewer items means a wider margin around every figure, which is fine if the test says so and misleading if it prints a precise-looking number anyway. A five-minute test can be honest, but only by admitting it is coarse: the arithmetic of reliability does not negotiate.

Length also buys structure. Measuring five facets separately takes enough items per facet to estimate each one; ours uses 8 per facet, enough to hold the margin to about 9 points on each at the reliability we assume until real response data replaces the assumption. A very short test can only honestly report one blurry total.

The honest range

Ours is 54 questions and most people finish inside twelve minutes. That length is not a virtue in itself; it is what buying facet-level margins at these widths costs, as the accuracy page sets out. Past a point, more length stops paying: fatigue creeps into the answers and the margin narrows more slowly than the sitting degrades. Those two pressures push against each other, which is why a facet-level test tends to land somewhere in the ten-to-twenty-minute range, and ours sits inside it.

One thing length cannot buy

Truthfulness. A long self-report test is still self-report, and an unsupervised sitting is still unsupervised. Length narrows the margin around what you told the test; it cannot verify that what you told it is how you live.
